We were about to revoke the kid’s Awesomest Baby In The World award (which he received last week in a momentous celebration for his brilliant portrayal of a perfect baby human - after finally getting used to the nanny) when, on Sunday night, the kid woke from his usual all-night slumber at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 5:30 & 7:00. We were puzzled by this sudden shift in behavior and mistakenly blamed it, as I’m finding most parents do at this age, on teeth. He was slightly more fussy on Monday when we headed out for a double date with the Lewis’ to Uchi while the nanny turned babysitter-for-the-night watched him. But, that night at 2:30 he awoke with a screech, screams, and barking-seal coughs. Marc brought him upstairs to me where I tried to nurse him to no avail. The screaming continued along with a terrible horse-wheezing and more barking. Marc and I panicked and with our brilliant 4-month experienced parenting minds we decided that his throat was dry… yeah that’s it! So I dipped my fingers in water and rubbed them on his tongue. Needless to say, that was not the solution. He finally calmed down and Marc called the nurse-line at the hospital and she informed us that the kid had the croup. Per the nurse’s advice we steamed up the bathroom and sat with him in there for 15 minutes then took him outside to the cold night air and then packed him up for Baby’s First Trip To The Emergency Room.

At 3 in the morning the emergency room is quiet and the people are happy to see a beautiful baby boy rather than, I suppose, a bloody crack-addict, so we were treated like long-lost friends who flew in for a weekend visit. The kid was given liquid steroids and respiratory treatment in the form of cool mist vapor and then epinephrine vapor. 3 hours, 4 diapers, 1 doctor, 2 nurses, 1 respiratory specialist later we were headed home with a sweet, tired little boy.

We followed up with a trip to our regular doctor who wasn’t satisfied with the half-consumed liquid steroid we got in the ER so she ordered a shot of steroids to make sure that we didn’t have another night of this. Last night he was a little fussy and only slept OK, but, he woke up pretty darn happy at 9 with a little bit of a sniffle, as “the croup” has turned into a cold. The kid’s Awesomest Baby title is intact as he has been so incredibly good throughout this experience.

Albert & Tari are coming to visit this weekend! Hooray!

While this is great news and means that we are in store for many, many fabulous meals, at least one night of live music, movies (an experiment in how guilty I can feel for leaving the kid with the nanny while NOT working), shopping and of course plenty of cuddling with the boy, this also means that we should try our very hardest to clean up our house and unpack from this summer.

UGH!

Marc and I used to pride ourselves on our abililty to pack for a trip in under and hour and travel with only one bag between us. Those days are distant memories, gone the way of sleeping in until noon and drug-fueled, all-nighters in Vegas. OK so, we never had drug-fueled all-nighters in Vegas - but, we COULD have. But, now no matter how short the trip we inevitably manage to fill our entire car with crap for the kid. This last trip home was compounded with the fact that we had a baby shower’s worth of goodies to add to the mix.

So, Lewis’s - we are excited to see you and hope you don’t mind sleeping out on the back deck, because our house is too full of crap!

So, the kid is a rocker as witnessed by his affinity for post-punk and its sleep-inducing capabilities. I wouldn’t have even claimed such a thing, had my parents not seen the results of blasting Blood On The Wall in the car over an over-tired baby’s screams. This summer after a housewarming party about an hour drive from their house we all got to experience Harrison as an overstimulated, severely nap-deprived baby at eight at night. Nothing was working until Marc asked if my parents would mind if he played “the music”. At first I said no - I wanted to spare them from what would no doubt be an uncomfortable listening experience. After a few minutes of crying with no end in sight, my mom said, YES put on “the music” whatever it takes to shut this kid up! Marc played the album “Liferz” and within 15 seconds the kid was knocked out - the whole drive home. Here’s a link to a video clip of the band playing at last year’s SXSW to one of Harrison’s favorites:

Why on earth did it take me four months to add this almighty new drug to my post-pregnancy regimen? How is it possible that for four months I have doubled my wrinkle count from stress about not having enough milk to feed my child when this lifesaver in a gelatin capsule was right there in the holistic herb isle? Ground up Fenugreek seed is not only the magic powder used to make Indian curry powder, but, it can increase a mother’s milk supply. The only side effect, other than a happier, fuller-bellied baby, is that my under-arms smell like an Indian restaurant with an odor that cannot be covered up with the application of deodorant. The addition of “Fresh Morning Breeze” only compounds to the stench making me feel as though I am living in an apartment above Bombay Garden House of Curry & Laundromat.

The other child has been the most perfect of all perfect babies since his carseat was first set in our entry last Thursday. I had no idea that babies could be as mellow as - we’ll just call him “Little Perfect” - is. And because of this clear imbalance in fairness in the universe - there must be a catch - underneath Little Perfect’s cute and cuddly exterior must lie an evil genius or at the very least a future Young Republican who will rebel later in life by calling Rush Limbaugh a hero. Time will tell.
