Harrison told me yesterday that he wanted a little sister… and another sister too.

If his dream were to come true that would mean that I would be insane blessed enough to get pregnant TWO more times or be burdened blessed with twins. Let’s hope he doesn’t have any crazy magical psychic powers.

And while time passes and Harrison gets increasingly awesome and I forget about how annoying babies are, I have to say… I’m coming around to the idea of doing it again. But, I’m on a good-healthy streak with my knee and finding my stride in derby. The season is half over and I can’t imagine NOT doing this. So, as long as my ol’ body can keep up with my desire to skate around in circles and hit other women, that fictitious baby will have to wait. Also – I did the math – I figure I can get at least 2 more years in with this crazy sport and still have another little bean before I’m 40. Unless I counted wrong… which is entirely possible. I fell pretty hard on Monday and could have jostled around some of my brain parts.

There is a debate – well, can you call a bunch of internet chatter a debate? – about wine drinking during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are the close-minded-know-it-all-old-school-folks and then there are people who I choose to listen to. During the second and third trimesters of Harrison’s life in-womb I enjoyed probably a glass of wine a week with dinner. Not even close to enough for me or the precious cargo I was carrying to feel, but, just enough for me to feel human again. I love food – I think I’ve established that. But, more than just food – it’s the experience of dining that I really enjoy. And dining for me often times includes a wine accompaniment. The glass of wine a week was such a special occasion maker for me that it helped pass the uncountable weeks of pregnancy. I also decided that I was not going to give up drinking wine because I am breastfeeding. There are some pretty clear guidelines to help a mother know when and when not to share with the little one post-drink: it takes approximately 15 minutes for alcohol to get into your breast milk and 2 hours to get out. But, I believe that a small glass of wine in a two hour period is not going to harm either of us, so, I’ll go ahead and feed him without worrying about it and I will pump before if I am going to indulge in multiple glasses of wine or coffee. Now, having said all of that, I am in no position, as I have no medical training whatsoever, to give advice on the subject. But, when I first learned of Harrison’s burgeoning life inside of me, all I could think about was what I was having to give up. And I felt a little bit saved when I learned that a friend who had just given birth to a gorgeous baby enjoyed 1 or more glasses of wine a week in her second and third trimesters. I did a a bunch of “research” (aka reading through the internet chatter) to find both sides of the debate. The “even a drop could harm your baby” side or the “occasional wine with food, though not recommended by doctors, is probably fine for you and baby, and can help relax the mom-to-be”. I am not swayed by fear-based opinions so, I stuck with my girls on the relaxed side.

Recently I passed on my experience with a friend who has entered her second trimester and was feeling a little down, a little not-herself, with a little case of writers block – makes sense as she is a wine-blogger. I’ve been missing her writing so, I thought it might help. And hooray – she’s back!

My large maternity shorts are about to fall off me! This is exciting, because when I bought these in March they were a bit too large, but, I was desperate for something else to wear and desperate to NOT go back the mall. But, toward the end of the pregnancy they fit. Snugly.

I am still wearing maternity clothes exclusively. This is because a week and a half post-delivery my belly had shrunk quite a bit and I got overly excited. I dug into my closet to grab my all-time favorite piece of clothing – my army green cargo skirt. I’ve had that thing for over eight years – I traded my sister a black leather jacket for the already worn skirt. At the time, I knew the trade wasn’t necessarily fair, however, I was giving up a life of leather jackets for a simpler life in Tahoe. Giving up my oh-so-stressful life in advertising and design back in the hustle and bustle of Fresno for a life of waiting tables, snowboarding and paycheck-to-paycheck living with the new found love of my life (the now, father of my child). That skirt paired with a black tank top and combat boots or flip flops or tennies – depending on the occasion – was my uniform and has traveled the world, played more disc golf and probably seen more live music than a lot of people I know. So, back to a couple weeks ago, I got the skirt out and without even thinking about it, slid it on. I honestly thought that my body had returned to it’s former shape – needless to say I was 100% deluded. I couldn’t zip up one single zip. The zips could barely even see each other, let alone come together in a seamless union. Shocked and saddened I threw it up into the top of the closet – if I couldn’t wear it I didn’t want to see it.

Now, we’re at 25 days and I think there has been a little more progress, however, I dare not risk another embarrassing skirt scenario. I think I’ll stick with the roomy preggo clothes for a while longer.

*Because I am so severely late in an update – here is a pre-written post – “recipe #2″ (because I assumed I’d be waiting for the little man to show up all week.) This weekend I intend to write the story of Harrison’s birth as well as our first night home – which was INSANE!

Preg-Krispy-Treats

+/- 1 cup Mini-Marshmallows
+/- 3/4 cup Rice Krispies

Place marshmallows in a bowl in the microwave oven for about 1 minute. When they have puffed up past the rim of the bowl, they are done. Add krispies. Mix. Eat.

I know – genius. This was actually developed by myself and the culinary visionaries that I lived with in college. We used to make HUGE bowls of this, mix with wooden spoons and eat off of those from the community bowl. I have obviously become far more sophisticated in my lifestyle since then.

While last time, I felt as though my body was swelling to horror movie proportions – now, it actually is. It’s mainly focused in the hands, elbows and a bit in the ankles. But, my hands are white (and not just my normal translucent white – no, bright-white; stretched-to-the-max-white) with dark red creases as if to accentuate the sausage-linkness. They are really sore – apparently it’s like arthritis – fluid in the joints. The kid is already causing premature aging. Yeah – awesome.

Thinking back over the past months I realized that I have developed some fantastic new recipes which need to be documented for all eternity. Some came and were short lived; while others have stood the test of pregnant-time. Here is a recent favorite.

Preg-Oatmeal

+/- 1/2 cup Raw Whole Rolled Oats
+/- 1/8 cup Wheatgerm
+/- 1/8 cup Chopped Pecans
1 Banana
Some Cinnamon
Some Sugar
Pinch of salt

Peel the banana and place in a bowl. Mash it with a fork. Pour in all other ingredients. Mix. Eat.

I’m not joking – I actually eat this – like, everyday.
And Marc, for all of his adventurous eating, refuses to try the truly exciting nouveau-cuisine I’ve created…his loss.

We went to see our doc on Friday with eager anticipation. We left feeling defeated, all of our plans for a perfectly on-time baby vanished while she smiled back at us, with a “oh you are not having this baby any time soon.”

I was <strike>grumpy</strike> pissed for about an hour, then we got back home and jumped back into work, because the list that is staring back at me from behind the monitor has a few things left on it: design two websites, Kylie’s wedding invitations, a line of women’s clothing graphics and finalize a corporate identity project… you know, just a few things.

While I wanted to think that the baby and I have a connection, that were communicating: “Dude, we’ve been at this for a while now – 40 weeks is plenty of time. Let’s call it a day – you can come on out now.” I think he’s probably more in-tune with our lives than we know. I’ve been staring at that list for a while now, I’m sure he knows it by heart, and is not letting my shirk my responsibilities. He will come out once those items have been properly crossed off.

So, back to the grindstone. Because we only had one more official day of this pregnancy I decided to have a cup of coffee. It was like a crack-whore getting out of solitary confinement and being set free, back into the grimy underbelly of the city and scoring again – like it was the first time. Me and the baby got high on caffeine and loved it. Tea should be left to parties with finger sandwiches and petits fours. Coffee IS my drug of choice.

Thanks to the jolt I busted out three items on the list and crossed out Kylie’s invites (sorry Ky – I figured I could trick the kid to come out and then I’d do them next week once he was here). But, it’s Saturday and there’s nothing happening. So, I may just have to get those done after all.

There’s a new belly shot up – 40 weeks. Holy cow – we made it! Now the real waiting begins.
