The kid’s imagination is astounding and I am probably more proud of this than any other milestone to date. Smiling was awesome. And yes, I got really excited about walking. But, IMAGINATION!
Holy cow has the kid taken the concept and run with it.
It began a while ago – last summer even – when he started sharing his drinks with his toys. But, he now pretends to eat food that isn’t there. Sometimes it’s “Blue Cake!” or “Cookies!” and he will share his imaginary food with you. And when you attempt to pick up the food that he has so generously given you, you are almost always – embarrassingly enough – picking up the food from the wrong place. This leads to an exchange of:
Harrison: pointing – “No – there!”
Me: “Here?”
Harrison: “Yeah.”
Me: “Yes.”
Harrison: “Yes.”
He is also fond of imaginary dinosaurs that hide in bushes.
And pretending to be an airline pilot. Announcing to the passengers “All aboard!”. And allowing the teeny-tiny little imaginary people to walk from the ground on to his outstretched arms wings, where they settle in somewhere between his armpit and ribcage for the bumpy ride around the house.
He pushes his little cart around the house announcing that he is “Going to the market.”, “To buy groceries.”
The “market” for groceries” is a popular destination for his bike riding around the house as well. Apparently that’s all we do around here.
He also likes wearing his backpack and “Going to school.” and picking up a small toy-suitcase and announcing that he is “Going to work.” or “Trip. Bye Bye!”
He loves holding “babies” – which have taken the form of, among other things, a roll of paper towels and a toy rolling pin. He is incredibly gentle with them – rocks them. Sings to them. Wraps them in blankets. Puts them down to sleep. And more often than not ends up dropping them on their poor baby-noggins as soon as some other shiny toy catches his eye.
He has also recently pretended to be a cat and a puppy. He’ll sit at my feet and look up at me in a demure way that encourages petting. I think it’s hilarious that it is only when pretending to be an animal (or watching TV or reading books) that he is capable of toning down the spaz. I wish I knew what that meant – psychologically – or maybe I don’t want to know.

That is absolutely wonderful. I can’t wait to see him. I remember you used to have an imaginary friend that went everywhere with us – that was before you had Kylie around to play with.
This is a cool kid. Brilliant.
My imaginary friend was Michael. I remember him fondly.
: )
thanks Aunty Margaret! I can’t wait for you to see him again… we are panning a trip to CA this summer (July I think)… we should plan a day together!
i love their little big imaginations! so great!
That would be cool. You guys could even stay here. After all we are right on the door step of the Oakland Zoo (just the right size for H) and the ultimate, Fairyland.
