the addition of “y”
From the moment we found out that our kid was growing inside my belly, I have imagined myself as a “Momma”. Which is, in my mind, an entirely different word from “Ma Ma” – the common few syllables first pronounced by babies. I never thought of myself as a “Mommy” – especially as spoken by my son.
Until… he chose to call me “Mommy”. Out of the blue a few weeks ago he started yelling for “Mommmmyyyyyy!”. And sweetly and calmly referring to me as “Mommy” when pointing me out in drawings – like the one of Harrison and me flying in a helicopter – Harrison was flying it and I was peeking out through a teeny tiny little porthole in the back (note to self: do some research on helicopter architecture, because you apparently have no idea how they are designed).
I guess I find it touching and special that by calling me “Mommy” he has chosen a name for me rather than just repeating what we’ve told him. That this is proof that he is growing up – making his own desicions.
It’s these small surprises that are making this whole kid thing so great… and that keep making it better and better.
Listening: The United States (one of my must sees for SXSW)

Very sweet. You are a Mommy!
Awww. James goes back and forth. I too prefer Mama, only that’s how it’s spelled in my mind.
I keep thinking that I need to see you guys and hear this kid’s voice and ever expanding vocabulary. I don’t think he was talking when I saw him last summer, was he? He’ll be so far ahead of where he is now this summer. I also remember the day Tyler switched to mommy when all along I had been mama. It melted my heart. Tyler goes back and forth too so it will be interesting to see what Harrison does.
That is really cute. Dad thinks he probably gets more volume from mommyyyyy than mommaaaa. Can’t wait to see him. More pictures please.
HA! mom – I think you’re right! that might be why… it takes a little of the magic out of it, though…
nicole – no – he barely had any words last summer… yes – seeing you guys will be awesome… speaking of that – we should start planning that camping trip! we may not be in California for as long this summer… Roller Derby may keep me in TX! but, thinking of coming out for a short trip in June. Let’s start making a plan!
it is just those kinds of things that are so awesome!
I remember when my son made the switch from Mama to Mommy, too. Now you get to look forward to the stage when he says it 1,000 times a day. At the beginning and end of each sentence.
more photos pls. xxx maggy.
i know maggie – terribly overdue on photos! sorry!!! I’ll try soon.
So sweet.
