love

I’m officially obsessed with a blog I just found. It’s all about food, and mainly about the bento box lunches the author prepares for her daughter.

I LOVE THIS!

Now, I am not a proponent of overly-produced food (chicken nuggets shaped liked dinosaurs or even “shaped” like chicken parts for that matter). Food manufacturers are under the impression that kids don’t like food – real food – and that they must be tricked into eating it. This is simply not true.

We have a healthy love for food in this house (I’m not sure if you’ve noticed), but, I think it’s that passion that has translated into a good eater for a son – that and luck. So, we don’t really have the need – yet – to “trick” our kid into eating his dinner, but, these bento boxes are just so freaking cute! I have, in my own way, always attempted to make H’s meals appear nice – good mix of colors, textures, tastes; and to try to arrange them in an appealing manner. Here’s a photo of last nights meal:

(tilapia, green beans, carrots, avocado, cheese, wheat pasta, blueberries) – this was taken after he had eaten some and um… he ate ALL of that – insane!

But, that is nothing compared to this:

(Top Tier: Roast Chicken & Lingonberry sauce
Bottom Tier: Mashed Potato Balls, Chocolate Pocky & Grapes)

I’m not sure if I can see myself cutting star shapes out of cheese, but, fruit and veggies on skewers – awesome. I think mashed potato balls with sprinkles are undeniably fun. And I may just have to try my hand at the occasional hotdog-octopus.

  1. Really, really cute. As you stated, I don’t believe you have to go to those lengths to get Harrison to eat but it sure looks like fun. Though very time consuming I would say. Who has that much time?

  2. well, the amount of time i spend chopping everything that he eats now – I might as well arrange it cutely… can’t take that much more time to put everything in cupcake holders!

besides I have time to really develop my bentobox making skills… this is a goal for next year or when he goes off to pre-school.

  3. Tyler’s daycare was impressed with his heart and star shaped sandwiches and melon balls I sent him but this is over the top. I don’t know that I have quite that much time on my hands but I feel a bit competitive after seeing these photos to make my kids lunches the most visually appealing! Thanks for sharing this.

  4. Wow, these are AMAZING. That octopus hot dog is genius. Who knew there was such an art to preparing a lunchbox of food?

  5. i love this too, even though i know owen would probably just play with it instead of eat it. i don’t think it would be that much more time consuming, pretty much anything in those little bento boxes look cute.
