a nationally recognized holiday

The kid walks!

H had shown very few signs that he was on his way to walking. He didn’t love standing still on his own – had only done it a couple times – I had theories that he was just too busy to stand still – but, that was just me making excuses for him… or not. I guess he REALLY is that busy. I had also been experiencing mom-fear about the walker – that we had stunted his development by allowing him to drive that thing around. But, with those few early steps my guilt was assuaged.

This morning the babies, Elizabeth and I were in H’s room hanging out while Elizabeth ate her Special K. H of course wanted some – even though he ate a pancake, yogurt, blueberries and a pile of cantaloupe for breakfast (More on the exciting development of our no-more-baby-food diet later this week! I know, I know – you’ll be waiting with bated breath. Just what the internet needs – more stories about babies eating!) – he was desperate to try her food. So, she held out a flake and he walked from me to her to get it – three good, solid steps, sat down and grabbed the flake. He didn’t even care that he had walked  just as long as he had procured his prize. Elizabeth and I were completely silent as we held our collective breath for those few steps immediately followed by an exhale and the screaming for

MARC!

to GET!

IN!

HERE!!!!

We then, frantically tried to get him to walk again for Marc, but, all he cared about was where Elizabeth had put her bowl of soggy-goodness. He did end up walking another two steps, then five or six from his room to the kitchen and then the couple steps that we finally got on video (above).

Elizabeth was just as excited as we were. I was happy that I had a witness to H’s foray into the world of the upright and was of course thrilled that one of us (Marc or I) was there to see his first steps. We had a standing agreement that Elizabeth was to lie to us if H walked without us seeing it. She assured us that these were indeed his first steps. But, the lie-to-the-parents agreement is still in effect for any other major milestones.

So, it’s 11:45am on Monday and I have yet to start work. I just want to follow him around videoing his every move. I considered setting an out-of-office-email-reply with the message

“My kid is walking. I’ll be back to work tomorrow. Thanks.”

But, I’m not sure that all of our clients recognize the national my-kid-took-his-first-steps holiday.

Wow that is too funny. He’s a bit early. The fun begins. I bet with a week he’ll to going all over. Once he gets that walking is so efficient he won’t settle for the knees. Good climbing too! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hey, what happened to your little baby? He looks like such a little boy now – a very cute one! It is amazing how much they eat at that age.
