quality family time
In contrast to last week’s post featuring that pernicious feline we have a heart-warming story about a family that embraces the idea that those who eat together stay together.
We decided about a month ago that it was time we started eating as a family. Which I resisted for a while because the boy eats at 6pm and if we are to eat dinner with him that means that we should be preparing by 5 – which is INSANE! 5pm is still the afternoon as far as I’m concerned – especially because we have the nanny until 5:30, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay her and not be squeezing every last minute out of that time in order to get work-work done. But, we bit the bullet and researched a bunch of quick meals to make each night. None of which have anything to do with the annoying Rachel Ray – I’m sorry but, it doesn’t matter how indie she is – I just can’t watch her. That doesn’t mean that I won’t try to crash her party this year, though.
I think it was this addition to our routine that increased the boy’s babbling by significant proportions. There is rarely a moment in the day that the kid isn’t making noise. The latest addition to his limited vocabulary is screatching at the top of his lungs like a baby pterodactyl (and yes – I had to look up how to spell that – are you kidding me!?). This usually signifies a desire for any and all food that is within sight. There is also “ma ma ma MA MA MAAA MAAAAAAA!!!!!” which means more. NOW!
He is still an awesome eater, with no dislikes as long as I roast his apples and add cinnamon – plain old steamed apples are sooo last month. We have started giving him shredded cheese, avocados and banana pieces to feed himself along with the mix of homemade food and NEW! delicious store-bought varieties:
Spout Baby Food, by celebrity-chef Tyler Florence is good, and I don’t just mean in a it-gives-my-kid-the-nutrition-he-needs-and-it-doesn’t-smell-too-foul kind of way – it is good in the sense that I would serve it in a pinch to adult guests at a dinner party. I’m not kidding.
Listening: The Airborne Toxic Event

See how fast time passes. He’s at the table with you! Before you know it he’ll be starting kindergarten. (Jillian starts in Sept.). The next big jiggle comes when he starts walking and talking. What fun. Record his speech if you can. In a few years it will be great fun to listen to it.
so sweet. is he feeding himself now?
