baby’s first pho
My very favorite food, as I’ve mentioned many times previously, is PHO – more specifically, Pho Tai (rare steak). I add all the basil I can, squeeze of lime, two servings of bean sprouts because Marc doesn’t care for them, Sriracha and chili paste to the the magical beef broth. The adding of condiments is so natural that I do it without thinking, even when Marc and I had discussed wanted to let the kid try the soup for the first time. Luckily, Marc wasn’t quite as hasty with the spicy sauces – he only added jalapeno slices to his soup – and they were only on one side – so we figured it was safe to let the kid try some broth and broken up noodles.
We are so eager to get this kid eating human food – baby food, even the homemade stuff – is just so boring! Neither of us can wait until the kid will belly up to the table with us and enjoy some of our favorites like a HOT NOODLE!
The kid sipped his bits of broth from Marc’s spoon like a champ. He loved it – as we new he would! Until the jalapenos permeated the entire bowl of soup on the last bite, at which point his face turned red; he was flushed with panic; and he started to cough uncontrollably. He was officially initiated into the world of “the burn” at the ripe old age of 8 months. The skin around his mouth turned red and for a moment I thought his lips were bleeding. I was certain we had done some serious harm. I did a mental check through all articles about foods baby should avoid and couldn’t remember any mention of jalapenos. This was because it was far too obvious that one should NEVER feed an EFFING JALAPENO to an INFANT — YOU MORONS!!!
Later that day his skin returned to it’s normal, baby-pink-perfection. And now, every time we eat pho his eyes light up as he is surely as addicted as we are.
