if you’re happy and you know it

Friday evening we hired our nanny to babysit the kid. We went out to a fabulous dinner with our friends Kris and Ashley. It was a much needed escape back into the adult world…we were shocked to calculate that it had been 3 months since we last left the house without the child. Yes, that feels as depressing as it sounds.

The food was good. The wine was great. The company fantastic. And the time out of the house was priceless. It is amazing how a couple hours away can refresh me and make the 5:30am wake up call not only bearable, but, welcome.

While we were waiting on the cab the nanny asked if we had been teaching him the “If you’re happy and you know it” song. I scoffed and answered with a definitive “uh-no.” She said that she had never sung it to him either, but, that today she did and he clapped – when he was supposed to! I laughed and said that it must just be a coincidence, because he has never clapped before – we have never even attempted to teach him to clap; and we certainly have not paired clapping with any cheery-mood-assessing kids’ song. So, we tried it out. Sure enough he stopped what he was doing listened to the song and clapped when appropriate.

We are surprised and proud – because let’s face it, it’s about time he come up with some party tricks – but, seriously, this new found skill either means that he is intelligent beyond his 8 months or he truly is happy and just has to show it.
