economics

Given the state of the economy, I recently asked my dad if it might be time to invest in the stock market - take a risk, buy up some cheap stocks and ride the Obama-fueled boom right into retirement. My dad’s thoughts were more along the lines of “you’re dreamin’!”. So, Marc and I decided, instead, to develop our own fiscal stimulus package and went out and spent a bunch of money in the last few weeks to help the flailing economy - I know, admirable. But, really this is what happens when you own your own business and you finally invoice after 6 months of not doing so - you have some extra cash burning a hole…

We got a new car.

No, we didn’t even consider a mini-van - this is about as big as we can allow ourselves to go for a while anyway. It’s a VW Tiguan and we dig it. It’s also our first lease - which we are hoping will break our unbelievably bad luck with new cars (in the past five years we have had a tree fall on our car, $14,000 of hail damage, been rear-ended - twice, side-swiped by a semi-truck, had a tire-blowout on the freeway and run out of gas at midnight).

We added a whole lot of curb-appeal and functionality to the exterior of the house.

Marc and my dad built a fence, we added a driveway and concrete walkway.

We bought a few pieces of furniture. The kid is going to start crawling in the next few months and we decided that it was irresponsible to have a media center built from cement blocks and plywood at his eye level, so we ordered a new one.

And a new sofa-sleeper for the office/guestroom, the bed of which is supposed to be extraordinarily comfortable - it’s a piece that “will last us forever” - the sales guy was really good & it was a floor-sample sale.

So, yeah, you can thank us later when this whole crisis turns around.

  5. I meant to tell you Aimee and Marc, you mentioned barbecue. We had fabulous barbecue last week when we sent to Sea Ranch. It was a little restaurant called Bones in Gualala just north of Sea Ranch. I believe it was as good as the Salt Lick (the waitress said the owners had spent 2 months in Texas before opening the restaurant and went to the Salt Lick).

  8. Well thank goodness someone is spending money. We were supposed to, having a new baby and all, but all of our friends were so generous (present company included), lending and giving us baby stuff, that we have not held up our end. Thanks once again for picking up the slack!
