5 minutes after

We decided that since we had made it a month with the kid that we should invite some people over who also have a month-old-monster so that we can drink champagne and celebrate. Our new friends Kourtney & Patrick have a cute little boy - Harrison’s first friend! - Finn (Thomas Finnegan) born five days before Harrison. They came over on Sunday. Marc and I made brunch - pancakes with blueberry syrup, a Spanish tortilla with saffron mayo, niman ranch jambon royale, fruit and a bottle of lovely champagne brought by our guests - it is good to make friends with somebody in the wine business! Everything was going swimmingly - Marc even had time for a little Wii before they arrived, but, I knew - I KNEW - it couldn’t last. I had a not-so-sneaking suspicion that the kid was going to explode. I was distracted the entire time they were here, until halfway through breakfast when he woke up and was inconsolable.

The fact that I knew it was going to happen should have allowed me to relax while he was sleeping, enjoy the company and the champagne until then, but, for the past week - his most fussy week - Marc and I have changed from the laid-back, bring the kid anywhere, put him in his chair and let him chill with us parents to the kind that tiptoe around the house and wrap the coffee grinder in multiple towels as not to disturb the sleeping infant… I don’t know if we are more upset that the kid isn’t acting exactly as we thought he would be or if it’s because WE aren’t acting the way we thought we would.

And of course, not five minutes after our guests left:

We had all calmed down, at least for a minute.
