animal vs. vegetable

We are incredibly lucky to have made really great friends here in Austin, while only technically living here for 20 months. And it seems that they all know us pretty damn well – we have six people offering to bring us food to the hospital. Yes, of course, everybody knows that hospital food is total crap, however, our friends know that food is entirely too important to us. And that the first few meals postpartum will be savored, remembered and recorded for all the internet to enjoy.

So, with all the choices in Austin – what do you choose? And how on earth can you decide now – three-four weeks in advance? I am a last minute decider of menu choices – I usually need to wait until the entire table has ordered to put in my request. So… where to begin?

Pho is an obvious choice. But… it could get cold in route – and the fact that when I order Pho to-go the meat comes raw and in it’s own container. That the broth needs to be boiling hot in order to cook said meat – means that Pho doesn’t sound safe and is sadly out.

Sushi is another choice – I’ve gone 9 months sans raw fish. But… now, I have the opposite problem… it could get un-cold in route. I like my raw fish to be as fresh from the ocean as possible and when that’s not possible, as fresh from the fish as possible, hence the reason that sushi to-go kind of grosses me out.

I have been avoiding deli meat for 9 months (unless it is microwaved to kill all offending bacteria, which is just a pain in the ass and dries out the edges of the meat – gross) – so, maybe a big ol’ deli sandwich. But… we haven’t really found a deli that is knock-your-your-socks-off-good making an average deli sandwich just not celebratory enough – unless of course it was shipped same-day from Domenico’s (be kind, I designed and built that website over a hundred years ago using the ancient art of tables and H.T.M.L.).

Mexican is an obvious choice. My favorite item on any menu in town right now is the Caldo Tlapeno from Curra’s Grill. The question is – will they do a pitcher of margaritas to-go?

If I were Marc this would be easy – dead animal, cooked slowly over burning wood… beef ribs from Iron Works and any part of a pig or cow from any Lockhart establishment. Now, if The Salt Lick were on his list of favorites, we could kill two birds – Marc would get the meat and I could have the vegetable plate! Ohhh how I love the sides. I do realize that the last sentence puts me dangerously close to being deported right out of Texas, but, I’m giving Texas a new born child – they’ll have to forgive me.
