I want to say one word to you. Just one word… Plastics.
That guy probably died from ball cancer.
In doing all the research like a responsible-parent-to-be I have discovered that plastic can basically kill you. Mind you that it’s not all plastics and they don’t exactly put you in a stranglehold and slowly asphyxiate you. I am talking about BPA and other such ingredients put in plastics to make them clear and sturdy. This more or less accounts for all baby bottles and though the studies are still out, use of these plastics has been linked to everything from early puberty to autism to cancer. Needless to say, we will be purchasing BPA-free or glass bottles. This also got me thinking about my habit of drinking out of plastic, namely 1L Nalgene bottles. Wouldn’t you know it, they have the 7 on the bottom to indicate that they are guilty of containing the offending ingredients. So, this week, when the garbage and recycling are collected, I will be saying good-bye to the eight Nalgene bottles I have been using for the last decade.
Hopefully I don’t end up like Mr. McGuire. Ball cancer would be an awful way to go.
>>> Finally, I got Marc to write! So, this stuff is pretty scary. Please note: that the chemicals are released from the plastic when heated. But, there are alternatives, including a new local Austin company - Think Baby - that is making BPA-free baby bottles! Also, here is a link to a PDF with a graphic explanation of new guidelines for baby-safe feeding.

Mouth meet boob, boob meet mouth.
You need a picture for that?
Chuck — those pictures exist. And damnit, I just found out the bottle I always drink out of has that stupid 7 on it too. Time to talk to the work hippie.
all the things you worry about when your having a kid. =) this whole BPA thing came out right as i was weaning owen off of bottles. he went a good 5 months with warmed milk in those BPA bottles. he was still breastfeeding too but i also pumped and all that stored milk went in to BPA bottles. he does have sigg aluminum sippy cup for water but now i’m hearing that it too has a liner that may leach BPA and bottled water forget about it. if it’s been stored in warm temperatures it too is tainted with BPA and who knows what the temperatures are in those warehouses. i could go on and on… but basically it comes down to this do what you can but don’t worry yourself sick about it because everything will kill you!
ha! sorry just read the PDF and it looks to me like any water or formula is bad. reverse osmosis to remove fluoride?! my pediatrician told me to use tap water for the fluoride.
i know - that’s why a lot of this stuff is laughable! but, it is interesting - call me a conspiracy theorist, but, i don’t know that i believe that science and progress is always right…
My wife just got a better bottle from CamelBak. They’re plastic and BPA-free! One less thing to worry about.
Wow, thanks for the info on BPA. After spending the past 8 years or so with my beloved Nalgene (that has gone EVERYWHERE with me) I find my dear, refreshing friend to be carcinogenic? Dang. Do you think that all the bad stuff leached out in the first year or so and now it is totally safe? Probably not, but I’d like to think so.
