The kid, or should I say the boy (since there is clearly no mistaking it), is doing great. We had the sweetest southern-belle-of-a-nurse do the ultrasound yesterday. When you read the conversation between us & her below - make sure to put on a nice southern drawl. It really is amazing, though, to think that when Marc and I were at this stage of our lives this technology wasn’t widely available. My mom didn’t see any images of me and didn’t have an opportunity to know the sex. Especially since this is our first kid we really wanted to know - and it has made it more real for us.

During the ultrasound the nurse measures all over the body and is able to calculate his size - insane! Apparently he weighs 11oz. All is good. He looks perfect (according to the doctors - this isn’t biased “mom-talk” yet) and is incredibly cooperative (again, according to the nurse - the scan took less than 20 minutes, while they had allowed an hour or more).

I gained 7 pounds - holy hell - imagine gaining 7 pounds in a month and being praised for it. My goal is to slow that down though…a pound a week for the next 20 weeks. Seriously - that’s totally normal… but, INSANE! Marc is doing his part - gaining right alongside me - I think we are pound for pound so far. I am truly the most selfish person on the planet. He wakes up each morning says he’s going for a run and I beg him to stay in bed with me… this way we can get fat together - it’s only fair.

John, Kara & Owen are visiting us this week. Which has been really great. Owen is around 18 months and an amazing little man. We have been getting a taste of the greatest and worst things about this kid thing. He’s been crying a lot - strange house, strange people, 103 fever for a day, and our house is literally the least baby-safe house in the world (more on that later - I plan to document the death trap that we live in so you can all judge us appropriately). So after 5 days of dealing with a not-so-happy kid, Kara and I decide to go to the movies and leave him with Marc (John was out with old friends for the evening). Marc was totally brave and calm and insisted that we go… First of all, we don’t have just any old movie theater here in Austin - we have the Alamo Drafthouse. They show indie, old and new films; they do a version of MST3k here - live; and they do feasts (movies paired with somewhat gourmet food - usually 3-5 courses paired with wine/beer - while you watch the movie). They have a full kitchen and food, wine, beer available to consume throughout the movie - you order at your seat and it is brought to you. It is literally one of the reasons we moved here. Anyway, Owen was not stoked that his mom was gone and that he was left alone with a strange man. Marc was not stoked that all Owen wanted to do was cry and watch Elmo. We were gone for three hours and when we got back Owen and Marc were chilling on the couch watching Marc’s favorite show River Cottage. Owen was really happy to see MaMa, but, gave Marc a hug and two wet kisses on his nose and kept pointing at him and saying in the most loving, slow, drawn-out way - Maaaaaaar. And magically five days of crying melted away.

  1. BOY O BOY! Yes, Roscoe comes alive! Does he have big ears? Just kiddin.

Marc, Oreos and doritos with a glass of milk works well! :)

  2. Don’t feel bad. I gained, and have not lost, 4 pounds after my long weekend in Austin with you! All you can eat ribs is not always a good idea.

  3. Well you managed to make me tear up in amazement and wonder. Dad’s comment was “that you shouldn’t look at that - it is God doing his work”. More tears from Mom.
